St. Joseph Island

“The Island” Community

Located approximately 45 kms (28 miles) east of Sault Ste. Marie along Highway 17 you will find the turnoff to Hwy. 548 that leads to beautiful, historic St. Joseph Island.  “The Island” is the second largest freshwater island in Canada and is home to some of the world’s best and largest maple syrup producers.  It was linked to the mainland by bridge in 1972 and has been home to year round settlement for generations.

The Island has two main population centres, the largest being Richards Landing located on the northern coast and Hilton Beach, located on the east coast. These shorefront communities with their tree-lined main streets as well as the picturesque rural character of the entire island provide the perfect setting for the many arts and crafts, music, sporting events and agricultural festivals hosted annually.

While on the Island for the triathlon, we encourage you to visit and shop at the local businesses, as well as consider extending your stay or coming back to enjoy the many pleasures found on St. Joseph Island.
